The “Landy Teller Champion for Culture and the Arts Award” for 2020 was presented to David Clement at the SCHF November board meeting. David is a restoration architect. He received a Bachelor of Architecture and a Master of Architecture (Historic Preservation) both from Texas State University. David is very involved in the preservation of the Vicksburg community. He is the vice-chairman for the City of Vicksburg Board of Architecture Review, he is a member of the Vicksburg Foundation for Historic Preservation, and he has also served on the City of Vicksburg Zoning Board, to name a few. David has been vital in many of our restoration projects here at SCHC for many years. Some of those projects made possible through grants from the Mississippi Department of Archives and History, include the Cobb House Restoration, the Auditorium Interior/Exterior Renovations, the SCHC Roof Project, and most recently the Convent Exterior Rehabilitation Project. David prepared drawings and plans for all of these projects. We appreciate David Clement so much, and we were thrilled to present to him "The Landy Teller Champion for Culture and the Arts Award."
In 2016, an anonymous gift was made in memory of Landy Teller. This gift was meant to start an endowment that would fund an award to be presented to an individual who contributes to culture and the arts in Vicksburg. This award will be presented at the annual meeting. “Landy Teller was a founding member of the Board of Directors of the Southern Cultural Heritage Foundation and in the early days when there were just a few of us who believed in the crazy notion that you could turn a block of old buildings into a cultural center that could support itself, he was a rock,” said Nancy Bell, President of SCHF Board. “He believed that it needed to be done and could be done and because his counsel was so well respected, he was able to encourage those people who we needed in order to make the project a success, to get on board. Landy was always available to answer legal questions, to write contracts, or to provide whatever support he could to all of our directors. He always had an encouraging word for our staff. We would not be where we are today without the leadership of Landy Teller.”

An Evening with Beads, Thursday, November 12th from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Karen Biedenharn will lead this class and everyone will leave with two finished pieces. There will be a large selection of beads to choose from consisting of glass, wooden, crystal, and some semi-precious stones like jade and pearl. Your two pieces will be a choice of necklace, bracelet, earrings, or sun catcher. The cost of the class is $20/person. To make a reservation, please call 601-631-2997 or email info@southernculture.org. Press release. Facebook event page.

Southern Cultural Heritage Foundation receives MAC Cares Emergency Grant from Mississippi Arts Commission! The Southern Cultural Heritage Foundation (SCHF) has been awarded a $4,800 grant from the Mississippi Arts Commission (MAC). This grant is a portion of the approximately $441,100 in CARES Act COVID-19 recovery funding MAC received from the National Endowment for the Arts. The grant awarded to the SCHF will be used to continue the mission of the SCHF and bring exceptional events and quality programming to the community through artistic excellence. Using funds from the CARES Act, the National Endowment for the Arts awarded almost $30 million to the nation’s 50 states, the District of Columbia and several territories including Puerto Rico. A state arts agency, MAC established the MAC CARES Emergency Grants program to distribute these funds and provide economic relief as quickly as possible while focusing assistance on independent arts organizations with staff. “We are incredibly grateful to Congress, the President, and the NEA for providing this much-needed recovery funding for the arts,” said Malcolm White, executive director of MAC. “Like much of the economy, the arts sector in Mississippi and the nation have faced significant challenges as a result of the coronavirus pandemic. Closing facilities and canceling events equates to lost revenue. We are thankful that the federal government has recognized this need and has responded.” The Southern Cultural Heritage Foundation, a non-profit organization, is committed to preserving the history and architecture of the Southern Cultural Heritage Center, while providing all citizens with the opportunity to experience cultural, educational and artistic programs. Among the numerous activities scheduled throughout the year, these funds are vital in supporting the River Kids free after school art program, a variety of concerts, workshops, lectures, exhibits and the many other events and programs that are instrumental in growing the awareness of the arts to the Vicksburg community and surrounding areas. The Mississippi Arts Commission, a state agency, serves the residents of the state by providing grants that support programs to enhance communities; assist artists and arts organizations; promote the arts in education and celebrate Mississippi’s cultural heritage. Established in 1968, the Mississippi Arts Commission is funded by the Mississippi Legislature, the National Endowment for the Arts, the Mississippi Endowment for the Arts at the Community Foundation for Mississippi, and other private sources. The agency serves as an active supporter and promoter of arts in community life and arts education. For information about the Mississippi Arts Commission, please contact Anna Ehrgott, Communications Director, 601-359-6546 or aehrgott@arts.ms.gov. Press release.

Classes suit both artists and beginners. Nancy Mitchell believes anyone can learn to draw and be creative. However, in today’s world not many people have time for weekly art classes. Each three hour class is based on a painting she designs to mimic the style of a renowned artist. The step-by-step process enables each student to recreate the painting, adding their personal style. Students also learn basics about composition and color mixing. In addition to artist facts and a touch of art history throughout the lesson, students receive a handout on the artist. The students leave with a finished art piece to hang in their home at the end of their class. Nancy Mitchell has been teaching art for 36 years. As an educator and artist, she practices a variety of media including basic drawing, batik workshops and charcoal. Registration is $45/SCHF Members and $50/Non-Members (includes all supplies) for each class. For reservations or more information, please contact the SCHF office at 601.631.2997 or email info@southernculture.org. Press release. Facebook event page.
