The Vicksburg Foundation for Historic Preservation presents the twenty-third annual Fall Tour of Homes Sunday, November 6 from 1:30 to 4:30. Experience the beauty of Vicksburg’s architectural heritage by touring 3 historic properties: the Gaimbrone residence at 2525 Cherry Street, the Peay residence at 3220 Drummond Street, and the Duncan residence at 116 Old Highway 27. Ballroom dance classes are offered twice during October, on Sundays, November 6 & 20 from 5 - 7 p.m. Mexican Traditions: Day of the Dead with Olivia Foshee will take place in the SCHF academy building on Tuesday, November 8 at 7:00 p.m. The Southern Cultural Heritage Foundation will host the second in a series of lectures focusing on different cultures. Children’s Pinhole Photography Workshop with local art educator Kathy Gibson and students from the Vicksburg High School Photography Club at the Cultural Center on Tuesday, November 15 from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. The workshop is open to children ages 8 to 12. Cost is $5.00 and includes all supplies. 2005 SCHF Annual Meeting and Luncheon will be held on November 16 at noon in the SCHF Auditorium. This year’s guest speaker will be Malcolm White, the newly appointed executive director of the Mississippi Arts Commission. The fee for the luncheon is $8 in advance or $10 at the door. Four Seasons of the Arts presents the Mississippi Symphony Orchestra’s Beethoven by Candlelight Saturday, November 19 at the Church of the Holy Trinity at 7:30 p.m. Fall Pilgrimage 2005. Historic Vicksburg will be on display during the 12th annual Fall Pilgrimage set for October 1 through October 22. SCHF’s Cobb House will be among the many historic properties open for tour. Mississippi Archaeology Month: Brown Bag Lunch Lecture, October 5 from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m. Jim Wojtala will lecture about the Corps of Engineers’ archaeological investigations over the past several years in Natchez. Doug Sims will follow with an informational program about the “why and how” of the Corps of Engineers archeological program. Mississippi Art Colony Traveling Exhibit: The 2005 Traveling Exhibit is comprised of the winners of its juried competition. The exhibit will open with a reception in the Cobb House on Tuesday, October 11 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. It will be displayed in the Cobb House through October 25. Mississippi Archaeology Month: Artifact Identification Day, October 15 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. The public is invited to bring artifacts and questions to the Cultural Center. Professional archaeologists will be on hand to identify and provide estimated dates for both pre-historic and historic archaeological artifacts. The 73 windows of the 1937 academy building are now being sanded, re-glazed, primed, and painted thanks to the support and contributions of those who once spent many a day gazing out of them. Mercy Archives Summer Intern: SCHF has taken great strides toward reaching out archival goals this summer thanks to the help of Jered Lambiotte, SCHF’s summer intern. Adult Workshop: Altered Books, June 10 -11. What's an altered book? It’s a book that has been embellished, decorated, painted, cut, torn, stitched, glued, printed, collaged, rubber-stamped, you name it, to turn it into an art object. The classes are open to children ages 7 to 12. Cost of the program is $179.00. Southern Book Club: In the Red Zone by Steven Vincent Wednesday, April 20 at 7 p.m. Andrew Miller and Kathryn Lord of Amberstar Glass will teach a stained glass workshop at the SCHF on April 22 and 23. Just a note: A special thanks to all of our volunteer tour guides, and to the Green Hills Garden Club. In 2004, the SCHF received a $10,000 grant from the Sisters of Mercy to repair and update the Sisters of Mercy archives room at SCHF. With the funds from this grant, repairs have been made to the walls and ceiling of the archive room, climate control added, and plans are in the works to add special UV protection to the windows.
