Multicultural Arts Camp

There are still a few openings for the Vicksburg Multicultural Arts Camp for children. Last year’s camp was such a success that we immediately began to plan for summer 2005.

During the camp, children discover the art, dance, music and cuisine of many of the cultures that make up Vicksburg.

By studying cultural differences and similarities through the arts, students will have the opportunity to learn new artistic techniques while developing an appreciation for the traditions and customs of others.

Included in the cultures to be studied this year are Chinese, German, Mexican, and Northwest African (Morocco, Algeria, and Mali).

The camp will culminate with a public performance and exhibit on the last day in the SCHF Auditorium.

The 2005 Multicultural Arts Camp will be mornings, July 18 - 22 from 8 a.m. - 12 p.m.  The camp is open to any child age 7 to 12.  The $50 fee per child includes all supplies, materials, and a snack each day.

Space is limited and reservations are required. For more information or to register, please call the SCHF office at 601-631-2997.

Southern Book Club

The Southern Book Club meets the third Wednesday of each month.  There is no fee to attend and it is open to the public.  The group focuses on Southern authors and subjects, but is open to any good read.  Book and author suggestions are welcomed.

For July, the Southern Book Club will discuss Memoirs of a Geisha by Arthur Golden at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 20.

Please call the SCHF office for meeting location or for more information.

CHILDREN’S SEWING WORKSHOP

SCHF is pleased to welcome back Susan Crawley to lead a children’s beginners sewing workshop. The class will be on Wednesday, July 27 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

Betsy Crawley, Sue Bayley, and Lindsey Gay will join Susan Crawley in teaching basic sewing skills. Each student will have a sewing machine to practice on and complete projects. Students will apply their new skills and sew a pillow and drawstring bag.

The workshop is open to children who have completed the fourth grade. Cost of the workshop is $40.00 and includes all supplies.
The class will be in the Academy Building. Please use the courtyard entrance on Adams Street.

Space is limited and reservations are required. For more information or to make reservations, call the SCHF office at 601.631.2997.

2005 WINDOW RESTORATION PROJECT

The academy building of the Southern Cultural Heritage Foundation will soon have a facelift. The 73 windows of the 1937 academy building will soon be sanded, re-glazed, primed, and painted thanks to the support and contributions of those who once spent many a day gazing out of them.

Many SCHF members and directors have noticed the need for repair to the old classroom windows. The work on the 4x8 foot windows will cost between $100 and $140 per window. The expense is more than SCHF can spend, yet the work is badly needed.
Fortunately, Linda Styron came forward with interest and energy to make it happen. After several discussions and meetings with several painters, Linda signed on as project chairperson. Linda immediately began writing letters first to her classmates, then to many other alumni of St. Francis Xavier Academy.

The enthusiasm and passion Linda felt toward the project and toward her old school was equally met through the many replies and contributions received.

To date, the project has raised $6,615. Following is a list of the generous alumni who are responsible for saving the windows, and ultimately the classrooms and buildings, for use by future generations.

Each year over 180 children take part in the free after school program offered in the academy building. Close to 100 children each week are spending time in the building this summer for various art and music classes. Thanks to these special contributors, these buildings will remain in use.

The SCHF staff and Board of Directors join with Linda Styron in thanking those who have contributed so far to the 2005 Window Restoration Project.

We have not yet met our goal, if you would like to be a part of this project, please send your tax-deductible gift to the SCHF office at 1302 Adams Street, Vicksburg, MS 39180. Please be sure to mark your check “Window Paint Project.”
