5 - 7 p.m. The SCHF offers ballroom dance classes monthly. James Frechette, owner of the Applause Dance Factory in Ridgeland, MS, will teach classes in ballroom, latin, country/western, and swing dance. This month's class will focus on the rumba. The SCHF is pleased to host "Homespun Harmony" an informal musical performance featuring the Delta Mountain Boys Blue Grass Band from Jackson and the Vicksburg Chamber Choir. The event will take place in the SCHF courtyard. The program includes show tunes, Southern and Appalachian music, as well a sing along with audience participation. Guests are encouraged to bring blankets and lawn chairs for the outdoor performance, although additional seating will be provided. The performance will be followed by an old-time ice cream social. The program is free and open to the public, but donations will be accepted. Please enter the complex from Crawford Street. In case of inclement weather, the concert and social will be held in the SCHF Auditorium. Join with us in welcoming the Mississippi Poetry Society to Vicksburg by attending a reading and open microphone night. Several award-winning poets will participate including the Poet Laureate of Mississippi, Dr. Winifred H. Farrar. The Mississippi Poetry Society Student Awards will be presented, followed by an open mic for all. The event is free and open to the public. The reading will take place in the SCHF Academy building. River Kids End of Year
Thursday, May 5, 2005 The River Kids After School Art and Music program will have its end of the year program on Thursday, May 5 at 5:00 p.m. in the SCHF Auditorium located on Crawford Street. The program will feature a performance by the River Kids Music students followed by an exhibit of the artwork from the River Kids Art class. SCHF is fortunate to have exceptional creative educators plan and implement the program each year. Shirley Harris leads the music program, Anita Houston, Director of River Kids Art, teaches the art classes along with Lorraine Copeland, Stacy Copeland, Vicky Dowdy, and Susan Payne. The program is offered to 180 children throughout the year at no charge. The program is funded through an operating grant by the Mississippi Arts Commission and the generous support of SCHF members and corporate sponsors, the City of Vicksburg, and various appropriations. The Southern Book Club meets on the third Wednesday of each month. There is no fee and it is open to the public. New members are welcome. This month:

Due to scheduling conflicts, the MSO String Quartet will not be performing at the SCHF on Thursday, May 19, 2005. The program will be rescheduled for the Symphony's Fall Season. SCHF is proud to partner with the Mississippi Symphony Orchestra to present the final performance in a three part series, the Mississippi String Quartet. The performance is part of the Symphony's community outreach program and is partially funded through the Mississippi Arts Commission. The performance will take place in the SCHF Auditorium at the corner of Crawford and Cherry Streets. A $5.00 donation is suggested to assist with future SCHF programming. We would like to thank the Green Hills Garden Club for working at the SCHF during the Great American Clean-Up on Saturday. April 23.
