Cooking Class: Impress Without the Stress, Creative Side Dishes for Summer Entertaining

The Southern Cultural Heritage Foundation presents a new series of cooking workshops led by Kristin Gluck of …By Request, unique pick up foods. The first class, Impress Without the Stress, Creative Side Dishes for Summer Entertaining, will be held in the SCHF Academy Building on Tuesday, June 13th from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Gluck will be offering four seasonal cooking workshops over the course of the year at SCHF.

Kristin Gluck is starting a business based simply on the request of a friend. That one request soon grew to several more and she now enjoys creating party foods and light meals for a variety of customers. She especially enjoys creating foods with interesting flavor combinations using fresh and healthy ingredients.

Raised in Delaware, Kristin recalls a childhood filled with visits to great restaurants and international travel exposing her to all kinds of flavors and ingredients. Attending college at Georgetown University, she enjoyed the multicultural restaurants the city offered and incorporates them into her cooking still today. Her love of cooking comes naturally. She often swaps recipes with her mother, sister and mother-in-law, all of whom are great cooks.

She and her husband Steve are currently raising their three children in Vicksburg. They especially enjoy the exposure to southern flavors and hospitality.

Reservations are required for the class. The fee for the class is $20 for SCHF members and $25 for non-members. Space is limited, so call today! To register or for more information, please call the SCHF office at 601-631-2997.

Adult Art Workshop: Watercolor for Beginners

Summer is the perfect time to splash in water—and color!  Come and learn the basics about watercolor paint, paper, and techniques in a casual and fun setting.  Participants will receive a beginner’s watercolor set in a wooden traveling box, which includes 12 paints, 12 brushes, a palette, an apron, and more.   Also included in the materials fee is a 10” x 14” pad of 12 sheets of Arches watercolor paper. Bring a sack lunch. Beverages will be provided.

Jeanne Evans has been dabbling in watercolor for over 30 years, and is a member of the Vicksburg Art Association.  Her favorite subjects are gardens and waterscapes, which she tends to interpret in soft, impressionistic styles, to capture the essence of scenes.

The workshop will be Saturday, June 24 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in the SCHF academy building. The $65 fee for the workshop ($55 for SCHF members) includes all supplies. For reservations, please call the SCHF office at 601-631-2997.

Class will meet Sundays, April 2 and 23 from 5 - 7 p.m. in the Academy Building.

Both individuals and couples are welcome. The fee is $20 per person for each two hour session. For more information or for reservations, please call the SCHF office at 601-631-2997.

Mini Monday Art Camp

The children’s multicultural art camp is a lot of fun, but it is only one week during the summer. In order to keep the fun going all summer long, we are bringing back the successful Mini Monday Art Camps!

Every Monday during the months of June and July from 3 - 4 p.m. we will host the mini camps in the Academy Building. Please use the courtyard entrance.

Students will work on a variety of art projects during the summer including painting, collage, crafts, drawing, ceramics, and sculpture.

All workshops will be led by qualified educators including instructors from our after-school program and both adult and student workshops throughout the year.

Students do not have to commit to all sessions. They may attend as few as one class or they may attend all classes.

Classes are open to any child age 6 to 12. A $5 fee per child, per session covers all materials. Reservations are not required, but are suggested to help better prepare for class size and planning.

For more information or for registration, please call the SCHF office at 601-631-2997 or stop by our office at 1302 Adams Street anytime.

Multicultural Arts Camp

SCHF is proud to bring back the Vicksburg Multicultural Arts Camp for children this summer. Last year’s camp was such a success that we immediately began to plan for summer 2006.

During this unique camp, children discover the art, dance, music and cuisine of a different culture each day.

By studying cultural differences and similarities through the arts, students will learn new artistic techniques while developing an appreciation for the traditions and customs of others.

Experienced educators plan and oversee all aspects of the camp. This year we are pleased to welcome Nancy Mitchell, Karla McHan, and Shirley Harris as instructors.

Included in the cultures to be studied this year are Italian, Jamaican, Egyptian, and Canadian Inuit (Canadian Eskimos). After learning customs, dances, music, and completing art projects in the culture, students will get to sample unique cuisine from each country. (Juice and cookies will be provided at snack time as well.)

The camp will culminate with a public performance and exhibit on the last day in the SCHF Auditorium. All family and friends are invited to attend.

The 2006 Multicultural Arts Camp will be June 26 - 30 from 8 a.m. - 12 p.m. The camp is open to any child age 6 to 12. The $50 fee per child includes all supplies, materials, and a daily snack.

Space is limited and reservations are required. For more information or to register, please call the SCHF office at 601-631-2997.

Vicksburg Senior Center Cookbook Debut

Senior citizens and volunteers of the Vicksburg Senior Center have been working hard all year to produce a new cookbook titled Senior Moments: A Collection of Recipes, Antidotes, and Short Stories.

The book will be debuted at a reception open to the public in the Southern Cultural Heritage Center Auditorium on Friday, June 23 from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. Please use the Crawford Street entrance.

The project consisted of a series of workshops taught year round in creative writing, pen and ink drawing, and oil pastels. The workshops were lead by area instructors and artists including Janet Akers, Jeanne Evans, and Lee Grant.

The new cookbook will be available for purchase during the reception for $8. For more information, please call the SCHF office at 601-631-2997.

This project was funded in part by a grant from the Mississippi Arts Commission.

Southern Book Club

The Southern Book Club meets the third Wednesday of each month. There is no fee to attend and it is open to the public. The group focuses on Southern authors and subjects, but is open to any good read. Book and author suggestions are welcomed.

For June, the Southern Book Club will discuss The Fortress of Solitude by Jonathan Lethem at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 21.
