SCHF Announces Board Members for 2009

The 2008 Annual Meeting and Luncheon was held at the Southern Cultural Heritage Complex on November 21, 2008.

At this meeting the following board members were elected for another term:  Joy Brabston, Mike Curtis, Minor Ferris, Ed Lawler, Ret. Brigadier General Robert Crear. Bess Averett, Mary Beth Lassiter, and Rodney West was selected to fill the three vacant positions on the board.

Lee Lampton, President of Ergon operations, served as the guest speaker.

The staff of the SCHF greatly appreciates the talents and time donated by its Board of Directors which ensures the continued success of the Cultural Center.


Holiday Centerpiece Workshop
Presented by Beau Lutz

Beau Lutz of Belvedere & Company will conduct a Holiday Centerpiece Workshop on December 2 from 6:00–8:00 p.m. Decorate your table for the holidays with a unique centerpiece. Hands-on instruction will be provided and all participants will learn to create a silk centerpiece of either antique magnolia or red poinsettia for the Christmas holidays. Beau will assist in the design of that perfect creation. Registration is $55/SCHF members and $60/non-members. All materials needed for this workshop will be provided, however, participants are encouraged to bring their own glue gun. Beau Lutz began his florist career working for Nick Cassino of Cassino Florist & Select Gift Vicksburg in 1980. Beau moved to Chicago in 1987 and worked as a designer for Millennium Events. He conducted design programs on wreath making and floral arrangements in Chicago at several retail locations. He worked as head designer at Rentokil, Inc in Chicago, IL from 1995-2000 where he worked contract floral & seasonal installs for large corporate clients. Beau Moved back to Vicksburg and opened Belvedere & Co. in May 2007 at The Flower Center. He is an active member of the Mississippi Florist Association and a Board Member of Central Allied Florist Association.

Holly Days Arts and Crafts Show

The Southern Cultural Heritage Foundation is proudly presents the inaugural “Holly Days” Arts and Crafts show. The Show will be held Saturday, December 6th in the Auditorium. The hours of the show are 9:30am-4:30pm.

“Holly Days” will feature over 30 vendors showcasing their talents. This event will precede Vicksburg Main Street’s Annual Christmas Parade of Lights at 5pm.

The decorating talents of Uptown Florist & Gifts will transform the Auditorium to reflect the holiday season.


Vicksburg High School Madrigal Dinner

The Vicksburg High School Choral Department presents a Madrigal Dinner on December 9 at 7pm. Tickets for the program which include dinner and the performance are $25.00. For reservations, please contact the Vicksburg High School Choral Department at 601.636.2914 .


Native Daughters:
Conversations on Poetry and Painting with Natasha Trethewey and H.C. Porter

To help celebrate the release of Backyards & Beyond: Mississippians and Their Stories, Natasha Trethewey, Pulitzer Prize-winning poet and author of the book's foreword, will present a special program and book signing with H.C. Porter on Thursday, December 11, 2008 at 7 p.m. at the Southern Cultural Heritage Auditorium.

Both Trethewey and Porter will speak about their individual art forms and how they, as Mississippians, decided to draw attention to their home state through their work. A signing of "Backyards & Beyond: Mississippians and Their Stories" will follow a powerful reading by Trethewey.


Saint Joseph Orchestra Christmas Concert

The SCHF proudly presents the annual Saint Joseph Community Orchestra Christmas concert on Sunday, December 14 at 2:30 p.m. in the SCH Auditorium. Admission is free and donations will be accepted.

The mission of Saint Joseph Arts is to provide the residents of our region with cultural and educational opportunities as a method of enriching the quality of life in northeast Louisiana and adjacent areas of the Lower Mississippi Delta.

They seek to continually provide “at home” access to quality performers and programs in the arts to our residents and students without the need to travel long distances to enjoy professional presentations.


Southern Book Club

The Southern Book Club meets the third Wednesday of each month.

There is no fee to attend and it is open to the public. The group focuses on Southern authors and subjects, but is open to any good read. Book and author suggestions are welcomed.

For December, the book club will discuss The Christmas Train by David Baldacci.

The Southern Book Club will meet at 7:00p.m. on Wednesday, December 17, 2008.
