Spring Pilgrimage 2006 is under way! The season was kicked off with a
well-attended cocktail reception at the Shlenker House.
The SCHF is featuring our newly restored Cobb House during Vicksburg’s
Spring Pilgrimage. Pilgrimage began March 25 and will run through April 15.
The Cobb House will be open for tours on Tuesday and Thursday mornings
throughout Pilgrimage.
SCHF needs volunteer tour guides for pilgrimage. If you are interested in
leading tours or participating in Pilgrimage, please contact the SCHF office
at 601-631-2997 or stop by 1302 Adams Street.
All docents are provided with a written history of the building and its
furnishing. No memorization required! It’s a great chance for guides to roll
out the red carpet for our City’s visitors and to share a little local
history.
Please consider volunteering for a few hours during one of the tour dates.

 The
SCHF offers monthly ballroom dance classes. James Frechette, owner of
Applause Dance Factory in Ridgeland, teaches classes in ballroom, Latin,
swing and many other styles of dance.
Class will meet Sundays, April 2 and 23 from 5 - 7 p.m. in the Academy
Building.
Both individuals and couples are welcome. The fee is $20 per person for each

The SCHF is pleased to bring the Mississippi School of Protocol and
Etiquette back to Vicksburg this spring. Jay Pearson, Director of the
Mississippi School of Protocol and Etiquette, will lead a youth (age 7-12)
and teen (age 13-17) six week course.
During this program, children will learn etiquette and
leadership skills while in a historic setting with topics including
introductions, posture, table etiquette, table manners, voice levels,
telephone manners, and conversation skills.
The teen course will be held in the SCHF academy building
every Monday from 4:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. beginning April 3 and continuing
until May 8. The youth course will be every Tuesday from 3:30 p.m. to 5:00
p.m. beginning April 4 and ending May 9.
The program will culminate with an elegant dinner in Jackson,
Mississippi where participants from across the state will show their
families and guests their new skills. The banquet will also include an
awards ceremony for the participants.
The professional teaching staff makes learning fun with
interactive programs, slides, CD-ROMS and illustrated workbooks.

Join us for a unique look into the struggles and successes
building of a new country in April’s Humanities Lecture. Charlie Mitchell,
Executive Editor of The Vicksburg Post, spent three weeks last month embedded
with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in various locations throughout Iraq.
Mitchell will share the ongoing work and complications being faced en route to
creating a market economy and stable governance in a place that has never had
either.
While in Iraq, Mitchell wrote numerous articles and
columns outlining the American efforts as well as the local Iraqi response and
contributions as the new democracy forms. The lecture will address not only the
progress and logistics, but also the personalities and opinions of both the U.S.
military and the Iraqi civilians. The lecture will offer an opportunity to see
the whole picture through the unbiased eyes of a local journalist.
Accompanying the lecture will be a slide show of
previously unpublished photos from Mitchell’s trip to Iraq. The lecture will be
followed by a question and answer session.
Charlie Mitchell, a Vicksburg local, has been a journalist
for 30 years and prior to being named Executive Editor for the Vicksburg Post in
2005, served as Managing Editor for 20 years. Holding both a B.A. Degree in
Communication and a Juris Doctorate, Mitchell has won numerous awards for his
writing and held various offices including Presidency of the Mississippi Press
Association. In addition to penning two weekly columns for the Vicksburg Post,
he is syndicated in over 20 newspapers across the state.
The lecture is free and open to the public and will be at
6:00 p.m. on April 18 in the SCHF Academy Building. Please use the courtyard

The
Southern Book Club meets the third Wednesday of each month. There is no fee
to attend and it is open to the public. The group focuses on Southern
authors and subjects, but is open to any good read. Book and author
suggestions are welcomed.
For April, the Southern Book Club will discuss Our
Endangered Values: America’s Moral Crisis by Jimmy Carter at 7:00 p.m.
on Wednesday, April 19.

Since 1948, the Mississippi Art Colony has brought together artists and
instructors to create, study, and critique each other’s work. The
Mississippi Art Colony is the oldest of its kind in the nation, drawing on
artists in varied media from Mississippi and neighboring states.
The Mississippi Art Colony passes on the beauty it creates by taking winners
of its juried competition to communities across the state. The 2006
Traveling Exhibit is comprised of those chosen selections.
The exhibit will open in the Cobb House on Monday, May 8. The Exhibit will
be displayed in the Cobb House through May 26.
The Traveling Exhibit is open to the public and free of charge. The exhibit
will be available for viewing during SCHF operating hours from 8:00 a.m. to
5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday or other times by appointment. Please use
the courtyard entrance from Adams Street.
